Blast fragment measurements are necessary to determine the size distribution. 2D method has limitations due to its inability to reach and model surface of fragment in muckpiles. Therefore, 3D image analysis was developed as an alternative. This research was conducted to examine trends and applications of 3D image analysis, examining its techniques, advantages and challenges. Photogrammetry and laser scanning techniques have been applied in laboratories, at open-pit and underground mines. Important issues related to the application of 3D image analysis in the field include lighting, individual object identification, ideal location for image acquisition equipment, and fine material estimation. The advantages of the method include the ability to create deeper 3D models and the ability to cover more surface area during image capturing due to precise instrument placement. The reliability of fine material analysis, the reliability of automated fragment measurement systems, and ease of application in the field are challenges that remain to be addressed in the future.
